OranjeWind and KNRM jointly strengthen safety on the North Sea
06.07.2026
OranjeWind, a joint venture between TotalEnergies and RWE, has entered into a two-year partnership with the Royal Netherlands Sea Rescue Institution (KNRM). Through this collaboration, both organizations emphasize the importance of safety at sea. They also invest in knowledge exchange and in the equipment and safety of KNRM's lifeboat crews.
The North Sea is one of the busiest maritime areas in the world. At the same time, offshore activities are increasing, including the construction and maintenance of offshore wind farms. In this dynamic environment, hundreds of people work on the water every day. Proper preparation and safe working practices are therefore essential.
“For us, safety at sea is fundamental to everything we do,” says Matthias Esken, Project Director of OranjeWind. “After the summer, we will start the offshore installation of the 53 foundations for our wind farm. These are the structures on which the wind turbines will later be placed. We see this as a logical moment to start the partnership. It is important to realize that KNRM is always ready to set sail in case of emergencies. Naturally, we do everything possible to ensure that the rescue boats can remain in the harbor.”
Over the next two years, OranjeWind and KNRM will share knowledge and experiences about safe working at sea. This will take place during OranjeWind safety days and KNRM training sessions. OranjeWind employees will learn about KNRM’s rescue operations, while KNRM volunteers will gain a deeper understanding of the safety challenges and working methods within the offshore wind sector.
“We both work in an environment where safety can never be taken for granted,” says Jeroen Wooning, relationship manager at KNRM. “Our volunteers are ready day and night, under all conditions, to provide assistance on the water. Their safety always comes first. That’s why we continuously invest in education, training, and the best, most modern equipment. We are pleased that OranjeWind is contributing to this. Furthermore, there is much we can learn from each other. Together, we contribute to a safer North Sea for everyone who works and sails there.”
As part of the collaboration, OranjeWind supports KNRM in acquiring new safety equipment, such as survival suits, personal protective equipment, and communication devices. These resources are essential for KNRM to carry out rescue work safely and professionally in all circumstances.
KNRM is ready 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, to provide assistance on the water. Every year, the volunteers take action approximately 2,300 times for people and animals in need. KNRM also always stands ready to respond in the event of an emergency during offshore operations.
